Nell and Ronnie had decided to go for a swim in the sea after lunch. They stripped off their outer clothes and suddenly Ronnie was wearing rainbow swim shorts and Nell a new yellow bikini. They had dived in, yelping, the cold water against their skin, thrashing about, laughing and shouting. Both of them repeatedly called to Molly to come and join them. Ronnie had shouted that it was ‘glorious’ although Nell’s screams every time he splashed her and tugged her playfully beneath the waves implied that, despite the sunshine, it was cold.

Molly had returned to the rug on the deck and was sprawled on her stomach with a cup of coffee and a newspaper. It was a local weekly called Calle Correo and it was printed in Spanish. Molly had asked Ronnie if she could borrow it and he’d immediately replied that it didn’t belong to him – his Spanish wasn’t good enough to justify him buying a newspaper: a client had left it on board after a cruise yesterday afternoon. Molly was intrigued to test her ability to translate Spanish and, so far, she understood about half of what she was reading.

She had perused a front-page article about an English child who had been lost and found on the beach. Molly had worked out that he was a six-year-old boy and his mother had brought him on holiday for two weeks at Palomar, just up the coast. She read the Deportivo pages, reviewing a local football match and a game called baloncesto, which Molly decided was probably basketball. Then her eyes fell on a page with a column marked Casas para alquilar. There were photos of houses to let, fincas like Ronnie’s and apartments like the one she was renting from Lisa. It was easy to translate most of the words, the number of habitaciones, the baños, the jardín. She was enjoying scrutinising the pictures of rooms, bathrooms and gardens and working out how much it might cost in pounds to rent a different house. Some houses were local, others in the north of Spain, one in Majorca, two in Portugal and several in the Canary Islands.

Then her eyes fell on a striking picture of a modern kitchen with rustic tiles in a mosaic style. She translated eagerly and realised she was looking at an apartment not far from a beach, with two bedrooms, but this one was a very long way from Calleblanque. Molly’s pulse raced with the idea of a new journey, a different place completely. The apartment was modestly priced because the owner would be away on business until Christmas and wanted someone to live in the house in his or her absence. The owner was called G. Lòpez and there was an email address. Molly pored over the information, making sure she had translated each word properly. The apartment seemed to be a lovely place, close to all the local amenities.

In an instant, Molly rolled onto her back and squeezed her eyes shut. She could feel the blood pumping harder, coursing around her body.
